This blog is an example of attempting to have one’s cake and eat it.

I know. I could use the standard Wordpress site and have my blog on there. But. Though that’s very good and it’s a great service, there are too many things you can’t do. I’ve always wanted a library and it’s painful and laborious doing that manually. I also want proper stats, but you can’t get those using the main wordpress one. Basically, you have to go self-hosted if you want the bells and whistles. And I do quite like bells and whistles, or more specifically, mod-cons.

So I’ve gone with a completely free web-host that is advert free (is such a thing possible?). Well, it appears to be though how good it will be (aka reliable) only time will tell. You can visit 890m.com if you want to check it out. It did go down yesterday afternoon, but then again, I know people with paid-for hosting and their blogs go down too, on occasion.

Ironically, I do own and have paid-for hosting that I bought many months ago, but this blog is an experiment in cheapskatery so we’ll see how I get on. I have a good friend who has kindly built it for me and I’m very grateful.
